Versatile, Nutritious and Delicious!

Stop by our produce department to stalk up on fresh California asparagus and celebrate National Asparagus Day with us this Wednesday, May 24th. Often considered a luxury vegetable due to its short harvesting period, and now is the perfect time to enjoy this perennial vegetable. Asparagus has a long history of culinary use, with images from 3000 B.C. showing offerings o an Egyptian frieze. One of the earliest written recipes for asparagus dates back to 1 A.D. from Apicius’s De re coquinaria, Book III. And the arrival of asparagus in North America is due to European settlers that arrived as early as 1655. The best aspect of asparagus is that it’s suitable for a wide variety of recipes and cooking styles. It’s great when roasted, steamed, stir-fried, grilled, baked or pan seared. Try asparagus mixed into a salad, blended into a soup, whipped into a frittata, tossed into pasta or wrapped in bacon and cooked crispy to perfection.
